Salty Sisters Surf Retreat & Instructor Course Sri Lanka

Madagascar

Not just a retreat..

Sri Lanka is where Salty Sisters gets serious about progression- this retreat is built for women who can already paddle out, catch a wave and hold their own in a lineup, not complete beginners.

You'll be based in Weligama, on Sri Lanka's south coast, staying right by one of the island's most famous and consistent beach breaks, with warm water and reliable surf pretty much guaranteed.

It's the same Salty Sisters ethos wherever we run this retreat: a genuinely supportive group, no competitive edge- the difference here is a week built around exploring new breaks and levelling up your surfing in a proper tropical surf-town setting.

Expect up to two guided surf sessions a day, taking in the home break right outside plus a string of other well-known spots reached by tuk-tuk in minutes.<br></br><br></br>You’ll stay across two linked surf houses in Weligama — one right on the beach, one just 100 metres back — both sharing a pool, a rooftop bar and hammock-strewn terraces looking out over the bay.

Weekly boat trips, rooftop movie nights and a party bus to nearby Mirissa keep evenings just as lively as the surf, with a guided tea plantation tour for a proper change of pace.

And if you want to make more of your time in the water, this retreat can also double as your ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course.

The Area And Surf Spots

Your Stay
Weligama Bay is one of Sri Lanka's best-known stretches of coast, a two-kilometre sweep of sand with a long, forgiving beach break right in front of camp.

Beyond the home break, a string of well-regarded spots sit within a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride, giving the group a genuinely different wave to explore most days of the week.

Weligama itself keeps you busy off the water too, with its restaurants, cafés and famous stilt fishermen, while the tea plantations of the hinterland and the nightlife of Mirissa are both within easy reach.

ISA Surf Instructor Course

Your Stay
Want to leave Sri Lanka with more than a tan? Add on our ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course, led by one of our female ISA-certified instructors, and turn your love of surfing into an internationally recognised qualification.

Run over 2 days alongside your retreat, the course covers everything you need to safely teach beginner and early intermediate surfers- from instructor safety and equipment to coaching methods, skill progression and programme planning- combining practical time in the water with structured theory sessions.

The ISA Level 1 is the global industry standard for surf instructors and opens the door to coaching work at surf schools worldwide. Whether you're a gap-year traveller, a career-changer or simply want to formalise years of experience in the water, you'll finish the course ready to teach- guided by a woman who's built her own career doing exactly that.

Basic info summary

ACCOMMODATION (summary)

Stay across two linked surf houses on Weligama Bay- one right on the beach, one just 100 metres back — both built around a pool, a rooftop bar and hammock-strewn terraces.

Breakfast is à la carte every morning, with a choice of a typical Sri Lankan spread or a Western breakfast, fresh coffee, local tea and seasonal fruit.

Dinner is served on the rooftop most evenings, with Weligama’s food stalls, cafés and restaurants also on the doorstep whenever you fancy a change of scene.

This retreat is built for surfers who can already paddle out, catch a wave and hold their own in a lineup- it’s progression and exploration, not a first-timer’s course.

With up to two sessions a day and a maximum of four surfers per instructor, you’ll work on wave selection, positioning and confidence at Weligama’s home break plus a string of other well-known spots reached by tuk-tuk.

Want to take it further still? This week can also be your route to an ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course, run alongside the retreat- entirely optional, entirely up to you.

Bring your own board for guiding sessions or rent one on-site- either way, equipment is matched to your ability and the spot you’re heading to that day.

Yoga sessions on the rooftop are available throughout the week, a good way to balance out two sessions a day in the water.

Paddling out together is where the Salty Sisters spirit really shows- cheering each other into waves, celebrating every small win, and building the kind of friendships that carry on long after the trip ends.

Evenings bring rooftop movie nights, pool and beach games, and the occasional boat trip out to sea- plus a party bus to nearby Mirissa for anyone wanting a proper night out.

Stroll the beach to watch Weligama’s famous stilt fishermen at work, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and photographed traditions.
