Salty Sisters Surf Retreat & Instructor Course Java, Indonesia

Madagascar

Not just a retreat..

This is the one for women chasing something memorable. Java is our most adventurous retreat, built around two of Indonesia's most legendary waves: the long, sandy peaks of Red Island and the world-famous reef at G-Land.

Coaching here goes further than a normal retreat week- small groups of 3 to 6, ISA-certified coaches and video analysis that shows you exactly what's happening on every wave, from your bottom turns to your positioning in bigger surf.

It's not a boot camp. It's proper, individual coaching wrapped up in a proper adventure, with plenty of laughs, big wins and a group of women cheering you into every single wave along the way.

Your exact base in Java is still being confirmed, but whatever spot we land on, the essentials are guaranteed: comfortable accommodation with a genuine choice of room types, all-inclusive meals, and the same easy, sociable camp life Salty Sisters is known for.

Days are split between the forgiving, sandy-bottomed waves of Red Island- a proper confidence-builder even at size- and boat trips out to G-Land, one of the most famous left-handers on the planet, when conditions and ability allow.

Theory sessions cover everything from reading rip currents and weather to surf drills, diet and competitive strategy, so you leave with a genuinely deeper understanding of your own surfing, not just a tan.

And if you want to turn this trip into something more, this retreat can also double as your ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course- entirely optional, entirely up to you.

The Area And Surf Spots

Your Stay
Red Island, or Pulau Merah, is a long stretch of open sand backed by mountains, with a peeling wave that can run for hundreds of metres- forgiving enough for building confidence, with plenty of punch when it wants it, and none of the crowds you'd find in Bali.

G-Land, deep inside Alas Purwo National Park, is the real prize- a multi-section left-hand reef consistently rated among the best waves on the planet, reached by boat with jungle at your back and open ocean stretching out in front.

Together they give the coaching team a genuine range to work with across the week, from building your confidence on Red Island's open beach break to testing yourself against G-Land's world-class reef when conditions allow.

ISA Surf Instructor Course

Your Stay
Want to leave Java with more than a tan? Add on our ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course, led by one of our female ISA-certified instructors, and turn your love of surfing into an internationally recognised qualification.

Run over 2 days alongside your retreat, the course covers everything you need to safely teach beginner and early intermediate surfers- from instructor safety and equipment to coaching methods, skill progression and programme planning- combining practical time in the water with structured theory sessions.

Outer Reef has been training instructors since 1999, with over 4,500 graduates behind us, so you're learning from a team that's genuinely done this before. Whether you're a gap-year traveller, a career-changer or simply want to formalise years of experience in the water, you'll finish the course ready to teach- guided by a woman who's built her own career doing exactly that.

Basic info summary

ACCOMMODATION (summary)

Choose from a sociable shared room or a private, upgraded room of your own- every option genuinely all-inclusive and built around easy, communal camp life, wherever in Java we end up.

Meals are woven into camp life rather than treated as an afterthought, with lunch and dinner included as part of many packages alongside your daily coaching. Shared food is part of what makes a Salty Sisters trip feel like a proper girls’ holiday — expect good conversation over good food, most days of the week.

This is coaching built for progression, not just repetition- small groups of 3 to 6, ISA-certified instructors, and video analysis that shows you precisely what to work on next.

Sessions run through a genuine drill programme- goal-setting, bottom turns, re-entries, cutbacks, laybacks and aerials- scored and refined so you can see real, measurable progress across the week, not just a general sense of “getting better.”

Theory sessions cover rip currents, weather, surf drills, diet and competitive strategy, with the option of trial heats if you fancy testing yourself with a bit of friendly competition.

Want to take it further still? This week can also be your route to an ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course, run alongside the retreat- entirely optional, entirely up to you.

Surfboard rental is included as part of your package, matched to your ability and to whichever of Red Island or G-Land is on the cards that day, with boat transfers included for trips out to the reef.

Downtime here comes with a proper backdrop- Red Island’s long stretch of sand backed by mountains, and G-Land tucked inside Alas Purwo National Park, where jungle meets open ocean and the park’s wild banteng cattle and native birdlife are never far away.

Paddling out together is where the Salty Sisters spirit really shows- cheering each other into waves, celebrating every small win, and building the kind of friendships that carry on long after the trip ends.

Whether you’re recovering by the water or comparing notes on the day’s session, camp life here is every bit as much a part of the trip as the surf itself.
