Since 1999, Salty Sisters has grown from a handful of local women sharing a love of the ocean into a trusted, international community of surfers and adventurers. We believe the water should be a place where every woman feels strong, supported and free to be herself- from catching your very first wave to chasing your hundredth barrel. Our retreats, trusted surf camp partners and carefully selected destinations are built to strip away the barriers that so often keep women out of the water, and replace them with confidence, connection and a whole lot of salt in your hair.
Why Salty Sisters?
We know that for many women, the hardest part of surfing isn’t the waves, it’s finding the right supportive, judgement-free environment to flourish in. That’s exactly why Salty Sisters exists. We’ve designed every retreat, course and community event to remove the barriers that hold women back, so all you have to focus on is your surfing, your confidence, and the friendships that come with it.
We take you to iconic surf breaks, organise the best accommodation, and handle every detail of your travel plans, because your safety and comfort are always our priority. With over two decades of experience, we know exactly how to choose the right destinations and the right instructors, so you’re supported every step of the way, in the water and out of it.
And we’re not stopping there. From our upcoming Women’s-Only Surf Instructor Courses to new Salty Sisters retreat destinations, we’re building more ways for you to grow with us, whether that means learning to surf, deepening your skills, or one day leading your own group of Salty Sisters. All you have to do is pick what you want to do nextt; we’ll take care of the rest.

Our Story
The Founders Gemma, a multiple British and European surfing champion, founded Outer Reef in 1999- bringing a competitive surfing background and a lifelong passion for training and instructing others.
Over 25 years travelling the world to surf, compete and train surf coaches, meeting incredible watermen and women, and learning what makes a truly great surf experience along the way.
Every Salty Sisters story starts somewhere, and for us, that's Pembrokeshire- where Outer Reef has coached surfers since 1999, and where the very first Salty Sisters session ever ran. This is still our home: group coaching on Wales' best beaches.
Training new and experienced surf coaches worldwide through our ISA-certified Surf Instructor Courses, building the next generation of surfing, one coach at a time.
After years of coaching around the world, Gemma kept noticing the same gap- women needed a space in the water that felt genuinely their own. So, alongside Jenny, she launched the very first Salty Sisters session, and a global sisterhood was born.
A true founding member who helped launch that very first Salty Sisters session, Jenny has spent over five years as the calm, creative problem-solver keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes- happiest out on the water on her longboard.
Leading our retreats for four years, Sabrina is our resident "brain box"- a university lecturer by trade- bringing endless enthusiasm and knowledge to every session she runs. Give her a wave, a fishing line or a patch of nature, and she's in her element.
